What is cultured meat, also called clean meat, synthetic meat or in vitro meat, and what is its future? Mark Post, one of the very first developers of this new technology that uses tissue engineering to create meat from cow's stem cells, answers to Veggie Channel. Mark Post and Peter Verstrate founded "Mosa Meat" creating the world's first slaughter-free meat.
"The reason to work on cultured meat is very simple. The meat consumption will rise globally and we don't have enough space on this planet to grow that amount of meat. So it's a food security issue. We also know that 15 to 20% of all greenhouse gas emission comes from livestock. We want to reduce that and you can do it with cultured meat. Of course there is an animal welfare issue with livestock meat production. If we can mitigate that animal welfare issue with cultivated beef, that would be very very nice".
